Dv: yes, I am very glad to invite Joe Howard as a guest at press this last year and talked about the expectation of diversity. So I talked about that topic when I entered this episode. This is a work within the community today, limited to the activities we are working with, that is, efforts to improve diversity throughout the WordPress community. An: of course. So before officially entering the word press community, I have been using word press. This happened after the people who formed the WordPress ecosystem business and members of the WordPress ecosystem activities and other communities. About a year and a half ago, I really saw it. I saw opportunities just now, but I saw opportunities. Although I saw the lack of diversity in this community, I saw some people who were open-minded and willing to become better people. How can people who are afraid to ask questions and feel embarrassed make this environment more diverse. Breaking this dialogue can be awkward, especially when you know that in a year like this, racial tension is the highest. It’s hard. It’s hard for everyone to teach this kind of dialogue. So I saw the opportunity and started chatting. I started talking to people, encouraging them to talk to me, and encouraging them to say. Listen to me. DM. You can ask me questions at the word summer camp. As long as you do it with respect. I will create a safe space between you and me to talk about this. This is all the other opportunities, such as the Wordcamp speech in my team last year. There, we held seminars on how to build a richer and more comprehensive space not only within WordPress, but also everywhere. I wrote about this necessity in this way, and I know how to improve diversity when people don’t ask me. It means a lot to me. Moreover, I am not only applicable to my team. In order to advocate all kinds of accessibility, I will do my best in the space I occupy to identify myself as quel – black woman. Moreover, from the perspective of diversity, they are a largely underestimated group. There are many other people who belong to the disabled community, including older people and younger people. I hope these people don’t think of themselves as undervalued or niche markets. Although it is an interested group, it can be 100% felt like belonging to this community. So most of what I am doing on WordPress is talking. It was just trying to stop my mouth and encourage people. Yes, there is a stupid question in such a dialogue. It is a stupid question. But whether out of selfishness, anger, or questioning. Ignorance or curiosity and a desire to do better. This is a great question, and it may be difficult to ask. But if someone is willing to listen and is willing to listen to this issue, I think it will make a big difference. So I want to encourage people to ask that kind of question, other people whose positions are similar to mine
I would like to encourage you to help me answer this question. If they are so inclined. The
Dv: ignorance is a crime that can be committed only once. I like it. So I am very satisfied with your participation at the community level. And I know you must have seen you around. What you said was that you spoke highly of the jumping and binding talk show between you and others. We had Joanna a month ago. So we are happy to hear about these efforts, both in the community itself and in you and others. So now I want to talk about it from the perspective of the company, from the perspective of changing gears, increasing diversity within the technical team or based on more information, and from the perspective of making better technical decisions through these decisions. I’ll find out later. We’ll have a quick rest. I’ll be back soon. The
Dv: hello. Welcome to WMR’s press this WordPress community podcast. Host David vogelphol. I interviewed Allie nimmons of WP buffs. In order to develop technology business, I look forward to diversity. Before the break, Allie was talking about the community. I really enjoyed listening to it. Now, when I shift gears, as many organizations have mentioned in the community, I seem to be happy to increase diversity. It seems that people there have an open mind willing to solve these problems, but some organizations have encountered difficulties in achieving this. In most cases, I think the brand hinders the achievement of diversity goals. The
An: you know. We all hope we can do better and make changes. And it’s all working. Really, you know, I always listen to people. Ah, I’m interested in raising money for weight loss, vacation or a new house. However, it is very easy to form what kind of habit and push your will and action towards the goal every day. Especially in inconvenient or slightly dangerous situations. I think many companies do not give priority to diversity, nor do they focus on doing so. I don’t think diversity is a checklist you have to complete. That’s all the decisions you have to make at all levels of your company. All the decision-making processes you have, how do they accept them, and how do you support human beings? Because human beings are diverse. It’s about identifying where you can spend your time, money and energy. As I said, whatever your diversity goals are, set and implement those habits. Whether it’s a broader customer base or a broader employment, you know what this looks like. For example, I recently gave an interview at a company that would not be named. For the leadership of the company, colored people are companies with more than 100 people. And when I asked about it in the interview, oh, yes, you know, the diversity on our radar is increasing. I know there are many other things going on more urgently. But if you work here, you will be happy to do the kind of work we like. And then I’ll do it right away. For example, I think I kept thinking until the end of the interview. Because they essentially say I’m not a priority. But they will still be happy to get the benefit of my skin color. Moreover, I believe that my efforts to increase my gender and support cannot be supported at all under such circumstances. And yes, it’s really a depressing experience. It’s common to hear that. The
Male DV: so I put all the
To sum up, this will be the concept of a brand with intention but no action. Wanting or supporting it seems different from action. It’s really an important highlight So I think, in order to further develop this, although the brand intends to, I think it is the factors that inhibit action. Therefore, if they act and achieve diversity within the technical team, what business or quality advantages will be added if there are multiple technical teams? If there is still some single culture in the team, what organization would you not have? An: that’s a difficult question for me to answer. I think that’s unlimited. There is a lot of research on how businesses can achieve better results and all other types of research. I think that’s an indoctrination of the goodwill inherent in your company. I know that’s not a very technical term. But that is right. Right. Moreover, if you do the right thing, you will learn it in Kindergarten under any circumstances. Yeah. You did the right thing. Moreover, his compensation may be unlimited, but it is their own compensation, so they are also doing the right thing. So I mean, I think this is a systemic problem across all industries, or a systemic problem across all industries. We make the decision that men absolutely do not need to use or wear women’s makeup and underwear. But that’s how we have strong people to design buildings that disabled people should use. I mean, I have a favorite story about Sally ride, one of the earliest women in the universe. She wanted to go into space for a week. NASA gave her 100 detectors and asked her. Not bad. Therefore, having multiple individuals can avoid confusion in this situation. Please avoid stabbing in time. What I mean is that you are specifically asking questions using text. There are many technologies that can solve the problem. Right? Like I said, I’m not an encoder. However, I work very closely with developers, with coding and technical staff. Know what the company is, what the technology is, and what the solution is? Do you know what our problem is? What can I do to solve it? How do I write this code in a way that solves this problem with as little code as possible? The
Dv: I think it is superficial to have several views on various people in your technical team. As you said, if there are no disabled people related to it like architects, you have no clear view on how to deal with the needs of users of the system. So that kind of perspective helps form teams. I also want to think about the creative toolkit. Most ideas are actually not unique, but a collection of experiences to express and solve problems. For me, a larger suite of connected ideas will ultimately lead to better results. I can’t agree with you any more. Then ask this question Therefore, what does the brand need to do to attract and maintain the technical team and all kinds of people in recruitment, just like the biggest problem of technology. And obviously, it also applies to hiring different teams. But what can the brand do to attract and maintain the various people in the technical team? The
An: that’s a good question. And we feel as if we have made an answer to it or talked about it. I think it employs all kinds of people in your company. Therefore, we do not want as many people as possible to occupy more positions, but hire them from the top, push them to the top, and provide support. Pursue diversity and strive at the same time
When I work in a place I want to go, I think the important thing is who I work for, who I want to work with, what makes us the same, what makes us like you and me. We have something in common on WordPress. Right? In other words, it is our co integrator. But I also want to work with those who think it is valuable and become a partner, because it means what makes me unique, what makes them different from me, and what makes me a complete person. Right? If you evaluate these two aspects of me, it constitutes who I am. You know, we say we can’t see color or something like that. You’re depriving someone of a part of their identity. Or you say, oh, I can’t see your obstacles, you are uncovering a part of who they are. Just as you look at color, gender, disability, age or lack, added value, what perspective can you bring to a team with different experiences in life? Sorry, it’s really easy. Is it really easy to accept common ground? We always use word press to do this. But when you hire for differences, you maintain this attitude not only in your employment, but also in your life. What I want to say is that in my life relationship with him, I began to attract such people more. Dv: I especially like the key points of leadership you mentioned. As you know, I talked. I don’t know if you, Mike Liddell, Anita Carter and sandy Jackson think it is gene light casting. Then they talked for a lot of time. When you participate in activities, when you practice thinking leadership, when you don’t see the face that reminds you of, you may think I don’t belong there. I think this is usually an aspect of participating in WordPress, but of course, if you don’t see people in the business who are related to the technical team you know. It may seem to exclude you. Even if the company itself wants to hire more different teams and bring different types of people to different leadership roles, it seems that there is no way out without looking at it. Exist to provide this path. It’s a good thing. Although there are still problems, I will come back after a short rest. Dv: Hello, everyone. Welcome to WMR’s press this WordPress community podcast again. This is your host David vogelphol. Before the break, we are interviewing Allie nimmons to discuss how to develop technology business by relying on diversity Hutong. We talked about how brands attract and sustain people. Involving different people in the leadership team helps provide visibility and access to others. The next question is, how do the technology teams review their builds to ensure that their technology helps everyone? Have you talked about the types of competent architects designed for people with disabilities? But when building technologies, how do you implement helpful technologies? An: great. We also have a touch on employment. Yeah. If you hire a team of architects with obstacles to meet you, everything they design and build will be kept in mind until you have solved the problem. Well, as you know, it’s obviously very important to have a variety of personas and survey participants. For this reason, I want different combinations of people, but I think it is a waste of time. Yeah. Because if these views and ideas are ensured, they should go back and potentially start from scratch.
Because. Therefore, if you can do something according to the size of the company in order to attract and support these people in the early stage, you can know the reasons why the organization and these individuals support them when they enter the technology field. It will only make the whole ecosystem better. And it allows us to bring that type of person to our team from the beginning. DV: Yes, it starts from the creation phase, such as designing or creating the target persona of the software centered on the questionnaire participants. But from the beginning, we can think from the perspective of generation through testing, from the point of view. Because you need to go back to the drawing board, and it’s not a lifecycle, let’s focus on how to waste time by not doing so. My last question, quick answer to this, you have provided a lot of excellent content so far, but the time is a little short, but only one type of people are used in Stoke photos. We sometimes cite ways to perpetuate exclusion and technology. You can share other examples, such as how to stop people in a particular group who are too low tech. An: I thought of four things. So let’s take a quick look. Ensure that the terms used by the team or website do not specify gender. Racist legitimization, I am avoiding. If you want to host a certain type of activity, you can’t become a VIP lounge. It will invite elites and let all big networks gather only the same kind of people. I am very familiar with conference slides. Many conference delays are made for specific body types rather than others. Someone recently pointed out to me that T-shirts and sweater boxes. The handsome AI in movies like how and kit are men, but the real AI we use everyday is women. Siri, Alexa et al. And in itself, the technical servants we make are all women, which is a very gentlemanly concept. But the people who go to space for wonderful adventures are all men. It’s so interesting. Dv: before you mentioned it, I actually noticed its tendency. Yeah. But there’s one final problem, Ellie. If people only remember one thing in today’s interview, what would it be? An: I want to say walking and chatting. It’s intentional, but if you don’t do what you should do regularly to achieve it, it’s actually not helpful. You really didn’t move forward. Therefore, besides intention, action is very important. Dv: I like that suggestion. So all my hopes and prayers, Facebook posts can’t actually work, they have to be done. Well, because I like all of them and hope the world will change. I was just kidding. But I think this is a good suggestion. No intention of action will lead to no result. What a surprise. Well, that’s very helpful. Thank you for your company today An: nice to meet you. Thank you for your invitation. Dv: of course.
