0:19 is good. Welcome to vivina today. Jonathan McNamara of WP engine. We will start with accessibility and travel, and make the digital front door accessible and inclusive. Thank you for your company today There is a lot of good information to deal with. Let’s talk about why accessibility is important. Spoiler is very important. We will look at the evolution of accessibility, and look at accessibility and how it is a process rather than a project. We will discuss how to launch testing and validation technologies for organizations and how to inject a comprehensive and accessible way of thinking. In addition, today we will spend a lot of time in the question and answer speech at the end of wevina and go to wevina, which can submit questions at any time. Please don’t wait for the last. If you think of a question and want an answer to it, please feel free to submit it. The
1: 15 we will review and answer all these questions today in the q&a section of vivina. If you want to follow 1:20 on social media, you can also use the tag WP wavina. And the first question we receive every time is will vivina record it? The answer is: If you are here, you will get a link where you can see the recording. 1: This recording also contains subtitles. Please watch it next week or so. 1: 46 the journey of accessibility 2 helps. Ladies and gentlemen, first of all, Nick Goodrum, head of front desk development and American Eagle network. Nick, thank you for joining vivina. The
1: Thank you for your company 1: 58 so, brake dance what is this? I mean, it’s like a lifetime commitment. Isn’t it? Valid, valid. You know, I’ll tell the kids I play with them, let them practice it, practice it. No wonder this is the most amazing thing in the world. 2: Good, full justice. So is Kevin riedberg, who is with us today. He is an accessibility management consultant for site improvement. 2: 27 Kevin, thank you for joining vivina. I’m glad to attend. Look forward to the speech. The
2: 32, then I know. How about working on the world’s largest popcorn farm? 2-37 is a long season. We actually sent most of the popcorn. But when I showed up on my first day at work, there were millions of pounds of popcorn waiting for the truck. So, so
This is a unique experience, very similar to ordinary popcorn, but needs more management. 3: 00,1, uh, manage the product together with the location to make the whole accommodation known. Yes, yes. Hard crops. 3: 10 great. Well, I’ll give it to you. 3: 16 great. The
3: But yes, in order to start us, Weinstein was improved by the American Eagle network when we worked together. Because we have excellent partnership accumulated in the past few years. Year. It’s great to share knowledge and really help customers train. 3: So, really, this is about education. Yeah. Because accessibility is for everyone. 3: So today, for the sake of new people, I want to know more about it. Then, it can help you learn more about today’s problems. The
3: 49 of course. And remember that everyone should focus on accessibility. Then, we will talk about everything from CEO to subordinates, consent and so on all day. But for a variety of reasons, you need to focus on accessibility. About your future. We want the site to work for as many visitors as possible. Make it accessible to everyone in a comprehensive environment. 4: So we’ll go straight to some rules. OK, next slide. 4: 34 very good. Some of these terms may be familiar, and some may not have been heard of. So what we have to do is to emphasize in this state. I will also mention some other things that are more international. But in fact, in the United States, this is about ADA Americans with disability act. More than 30 years. The
4: It was actually written into law in 1990. So when you hear these claims about accessibility in the digital space, keep in mind that technology is ahead of no, not considered part of the rule. Technology has been adjusted to be part of it. Accessible Air Care Act 5:1915,57 also emphasizes the importance of accessibility. And you can sometimes see it as a reference. If we’re talking to government officials and people who depend on federal funds, of course there are 508 rehabilitation laws. This is part of the update I talked about 88. 508. the most recently updated 2018 appears to include the following set of guidelines: Web content accessibility guidelines. The
5: 52 now, we will discuss this in more depth in a few slides here. However, this is a global standard that must be met to access the website. Global standards. 6: 08 please continue. Now, yes, what I want to say is that 1 section 508 is really good to be included in the WCAG guide. Guide, what is the best way? 6: And in recent years, it has really started to watch, which is really a good thing. Well, seriously, WCAG may be the way to go. The
6: 29 of course. You can point out a set of guidelines that we want to work on. As I said, no matter whether een, 31, 5, 49 are globalized or not, anyone in our location can work more easily. 6: Whether it is AODA and Canada, or 508, or other, depends on the rules. In this state, that is, this is where we work together. 6: 52 quite complex, but at the same time divided into several parts. We’ll talk about this later. 7: 05 so this will be an interesting part of the conversation. Because we talk about the necessary and good embodiment
Found several creative ways to raise funds for resilience projects. In particular, it is only a question of understanding that there are many problems. Although the journey has begun, it may be a fairly new process so far. Find the resources in it. There. Whether in the area of legal compliance, building an excellent user experience in the store, or providing more guidance on website improvement, the whole industry focuses on accessibility. Monitor these. 25:20 therefore, the feasible step is to understand what these resources actually are. Then I will help you today. 25:30 yes. Well, this time it should be time for everyone to answer questions. I think we can go to the next slide. But I think it covers all aspects of designing and building possibilities, working with us, and making long-term plans. Yes, focus on the second bullet to design and build accessibility capabilities for yourself in the future. 25:53 I know a gentleman in the industry. My friend gave a speech on \
Import. 20% or 1 in 5 people may have problems using the site. If you are a store that closes to all 5 people passing by, I mean, there are business cases. 29:17 ladies and gentlemen, I have a related question. Before proceeding, I think participation is very important. And that one. If you are building a successful and must be accessible client site, how many hours or percent will you need to add to the build to handle the accessibility section? 29:39 no, it’s always hard. You know, we can give you some common ideas, but this is a more difficult question to answer, because how far away are you. 29:48 yes. We have built 14 sites, each completely inaccessible on some frameworks and some CMS platforms. Changes are not allowed. 29:58 now most of us are using WordPress. WordPress might be a little better. 30:03, but the biggest difference is that, in fact, if you do it later, you will have to pay more efforts than when you did it at the beginning. If implemented in the planning phase, accessibility is actually developed and explained, so it usually doesn’t take much extra time if implemented in advance. 30:21 consider HTML semantic architecture, structure and all content. So it takes about the same time to make it. Now, you will need to make further efforts to test. This is more than just confirming what the test objectives are. Hey, I saw it. It’s okay. Therefore, although the test time increases slightly, considering the accessibility, the development will not actually increase by 2 times or 3 times than the astronomical number. 30:48, right? And it’s all about timing. Because we saw the statistics, after the live broadcast, the excite accessibility was reduced by 34% and improved by 30-40%. If it is a rule, before the website starts, it is not a live broadcast, but 20% to 25%. As you know, these are just figures, we have never heard of them, and there is no document to support this. But i’ve also heard that if they roll accessibility, and from day one, it’s six to 10% or less things because of, you know, like Nick said, you’re building out a framework, that, you’ve got components that are used over and over again It’s much each to assemble with good working pieces than it is to, you know, kind of, write everything on its own 31:37 yeah, I mean, the way I look at is the same thing with bugs, right? I mean, how much, how much money does it take to fix bugs? Well, if you didn’t have bugs to begin with, it doesn’t take as much And if you build it to account for those kings of issues, that will take less time so But is it easy to, you know, account for all bugs? No. so that’s why there’s still some extra involvement to make sure you can help resolve the items 32:00 nice, ok The next question on overlapping
Objects This person wants to know if you can recommend any cost effective ways for small business websites to implement accessibility features at a lower cost, in terms of like, time and resources 32:16 what would, so, I guess, and, in a sense, it’s what would be a good way to get started, or what are some like low, low resource, low hanging fruit, stuff that folds could do? 32:31 well, there’s a couple of things that you can do to start out, and I think we’ve mentioned them a little bit 32:35 if you don’t want to spend the resources on the learning and understanding accessibility, the w three C has great resources out there for that learning path, so let’s think about that, first, what, again, if you don’t know where to start, you don’t know where you’re going to be able to go So, look for those resources that are ready available 32:57 via W3C there’s a lot of universities that have pretty extensive accessibility programs that have good online resources that can help you get started There are a tool bars There are plugins There are different things that you can utilize to check your code page by page If you don’t want to put the money or you’re not able to put the money into the software, then go ahead and start out with some of the free plugins and get an idea on what’s going on with those, with those pages 33:29 I mean, those are, those are just general, good starting points with limited resources, and really, the main thing is, is rely on the stuff that’s been created with that in mind So, with a little bit of education, you can then kind of know, hey, I need to look into pretty much every plugin and every tool that i’m, i’m choosing for my website 33:48 and then you are as a, you know, an educated person You’re more likely to prod and make sure you’re choosing the right stuff to begin with So really, you’re like, OK, well, I want to start, and I need to account for accessibility with small business, I don’t have tons of money, and it’s OK, w
Ell, you know, let’s say, OK, is the WordPress space, right? Well, there’s already accessible templates and structures, or you can, you can use as a base template, but if you know, go for all the family that has, you didn’t vet it You’re now looking at all that extra effort rather than, oh, OK, well, it’s already got some of that stuff built-in 34:22 and then the same thing using the frameworks, the plugins, the tools, do talk about the accessibility, and some what looking into seeing, embedding that it has tried to account for it 34:33 and if you choose those, then your effort, again, is smaller because it’s kind of already built in place So, i’d say, you know, building off of that, what Kevin was saying was education That’s how you also reduce down your costs, as well 34:46 yeah, and, and take that next step when we’re talking about something like WordPress, there are templates that are out there that are accessible templates But what you’re gonna say is, but it’s not my, you know, i’ve got to add so much to make it, you know, to fit our program Those. Male 35:04 those components, those pieces that you’re looking at, that those beforehand because you can start out with a very complex template that has the functionality that you’re looking for, responsible design, Megan, menu, you know, all of those different pieces that, you know, make our sites interactive But they are done as accessible design components, so keep an eye on what’s out there and available It’s just really being smart with your starting point 35:37 all right We’re going to move on to using aria values 35:42 so first question: power aria tags used with hamburger menu, including the use of JavaScript for menu state, as well as labeling within between different parts of nested menu 35:54 also, how is the how is non mouse menu navigation handled in the HTML and JavaScript? 36:01 kind of a big one there Alright So just solve all problems OK, yeah Everything. 36:06 well, so the main thing is
Is you know, you could go let’s go down the route of the Wai aria guidelines for like menu, right? 36:15 but there’s there’s even I wouldn’t jump that far 36:18 I wouldn’t go down to just assume just throw Wai aria at everything uncomplex components because do keep in mind that aria is aimed towards a certain set of assistant technology It does help with the accessibility as a whole, but it is kind of focused on a particular set 36:34 so, there are sighted keyboard users, as well as people with screen readers and whatnot, so you have to try and find that compare on creating interfaces that are usable for everyone 36:44 and so the menu, if you go dive down into the Wai aria menu, there’s a lot about you need arrow keys, search functionality, a whole bunch of functionality You actually remove it from tab indexes so you can’t tab to anything, which may not be a great experience for a sighted keyboard user that’s not used to interacting with it And, so, really, it’s back to being kinda the basics Right? Well, it’s really an expandable content It’s a panel right there just opening up something 37:14 and so it’s not saying you know why, you know aria? It’s more about may simplified reo So especially if you’re looking for low budget items and you’re trying to do quick wins 37:22 it’s more about OK, well, we need a button 37:26 right? Opens and closes something All right, so there’s gonna be JavaScript involved with that, but it’s not that complex 37:31 and then really the second step is adding at least some state understanding to screen reader users, which is where aria expanded equals true false, comes into play And so on a basic level, you’re just kinda announcing because that’s the thing to keep in mind for screen readers is that it’s like a pin pinhole view they’re not provided a whole bunch of peripheral information, just the limit of the software 37:56 wow, in the sense of there are ways of putting it in But out of the box there’s there’s you
To start? I approve that 40:01 but specifically about aria, this person says, I haven’t found a basic introduction to aria tagging and they go on to say in my case, implementing the tags with element or WordPress, are there good resources you can recommend to understand how to begin using them properly? 40:20 MMM HMM, but, that is something dependent I mean, element or even kinda shows you how you can do like custom attributes and stuff like that, and so that, they do, you know, it is something dependent on what you’re using within the system 40:34 there’s also limitations of just what you can do, depending on your, your knowledge of backend, and also just how the code works So, if you’re more front facing and you’re just more just throwing themes, you might not be able to do it as easily 40:49 but again, it REO should be supplementary so it shouldn’t feel like I have to put aria on every single thing on every single component 40:59 you don’t need to it if your content person, you can just throw in heading tags and unordered lists, ordered lists And all of those things already have that kind of build in 41:09 and a lot of the native components that are already available from WordPress, again, if you’re using those base areas that already have accessibility build in, you don’t really have to worry about that as much 41:20 but, really, the main thing I would say, is, if you’re starting to create so complex, that custom components that you need to understand how cars work, understand how models work, understand how all of that works You’re now dividing into building almost your own custom components And so if that’s your concern it like I don’t know where to begin, i’d almost say, take a look at what’s been created and what has accessibility build in And take a look at that as a reference point, because you’ll probably learn a couple of things Then Wai aria does even have literally design guidelines of just like here 41:55 here’s an example, and here’
Make sure that both the group and JavaScript disappear. And it is usually a switch that is not difficult to implement. 44:06 one of the first questions I usually ask is what components or functions the website needs. Is that to show your technical knowledge, or to emphasize what you really should do? In many cases, you should review your site’s goals and focus on them. Am I selling products? Because if so, I want to enter the product, put it in the shopping cart and get the information as soon as possible. Because it really should be the focus. Therefore, in order to achieve this process, do not take a long and tortuous journey. Switch to number of hits. 44:47 now, if you are a developer designer, you may want to show your portfolio, know-how, and know-how. Great. You can then take advantage of these capabilities, but that is, components that have been built in an accessible manner can sometimes be slightly customized. 45:08 no one shares code on the web here. This is how it works. So. 45:16 you really understand how important it is to have that function. And do we really need it now? It can go to the carousel. Generally speaking, in higher education, the only reason why there is a carousel on the page is that all VPS in all universities want to have a small position. Web page. Well, it’s a political struggle, and it may need to deal with design issues. So it really depends on what you want to achieve on the site. 45:45 yes, I always try to find the merry go round. 45:4710 people are all, all VPS or politicians are the same, so all of us are important. 45:52 there are still 10 items. If only one item is displayed at a time, are they equally important? That’s, really, the first is the most important, and then you sometimes add real names. Let’s go. I don’t care much about this. 46:07 what is this? It may be the same as the news. Maybe I’ll stick to it. That’s why people think it’s ridiculous. Oh, I’ll have an automatic loop, right? 46:16 this will give you more attention than you want to control. 46:21 that’s why you feel a kind of road rage. Right? And I can almost say web rage. 46:28 is it because you make it difficult for me to enjoy the content? 46:33 many people said, \
We need to send a message. 51:56 this is one of the easiest concepts and accessibility, but it may be one of the most difficult. Because you cannot tell the 52:04 vendor that it must add the alt attribute to all these images, the vendor may not know what the context is and why the images are used. So that is a heavier burden. That’s what you really need to focus on and take a moment. 52:24 but this is a very important part that must be performed at the same time. In some cases, this may be one of the most important tasks to make the site more accessible and usable. 52: I think the reason for love may be that it is difficult to find the right resources. 52:40 and the reason for the mixed signal is that everyone wants to explain what your vein is. But only you can fully understand the context of the content. 52:53 but the way I look at it is generally, probably, maybe, I don’t want to say it completely, but there are probably three different scenarios. Yeah. So one is also a link. That’s right. So this is a script that often appears. 53:06 there is an image inside the link. Then, the content inside the image must be explained. Looks like a smiling man. 53:14 I don’t think the link is connected to the smiling people. 53:17 link will go to the partial page of doctor’s treatment. So the only message in creating a link is that the person who laughs will not provide the purpose. 53:29 in this case, if there is an image, you don’t want to explain the content inside the image. Especially when the image is more general? 53:36 the image of stoke is just a smiling person according to the number of experience websites you are creating. This may not be of much value, which is why they focus on demonstration purposes. 53:52, but you may want to make sure that at least other text really explains what the purpose is. 53:58 so there will be an image. Very good. Well, what is this actually saying. Yeah. 54:03 you may want to avoid it in general, but there may be text in the image. 54:07 you don’t want to put text in that picture, but you know that there is important and important information on a social picture. In this context, what you are talking about is the photos of our things. 54:18 well, it doesn’t help. At 54:20, the automatic tool was approved. For example, I put something in. But in the context, you must understand what you want to express. At 54:30, sometimes people can go to the evaluation Institute. Oh, that’s just a picture of people. You may not need to explain, but you are a content producer. No, I think you are a very important person. 54:41 that’s our vice president of sales. I want to talk about who they are talking to. Well, maybe you want to explain it visually. Therefore, there are several different situations. 54:51 so it’s hard to say so. Yes, perfect. But most importantly, there should usually be at least one alternative text. 55:00 then consider the context to see if it is purposeful or not actually helpful to the end user. 55:08 I want to use the example of magnifying glass icon in the search window. 55:15 well, we look at it visually and say, er, this is a magnifying glass, but we know what that means. Click this button to search. Well, if you want to spend everything on it, if it is an image, of course, you are it.
You also want to reflect in other column function images. And you can handle this. Handling action urges. Font Icon. I mean, there’s a lot of stuff out there. You have resources to answer questions directly, but they are actually scattered, so you need to find the most suitable resources for yourself. I mean, we have accessible resources that can enter the boot bar and read some of the codes they have. There are no screen reader specific courses. Therefore, no matter what your environment is, you must find a resource, not a general knowledge that is suitable for your environment and can be shared. Vivina. 56:19 in the fast webinar, if you want to share relevant knowledge, you may be asked many questions about legitimacy. Can you say that briefly? 56:40 sir, this is my duty. I spend most of my time dealing with this type of legal problem. 56:45 now working in the field of accessibility is a terrible side. Because there is no clear instruction here, it is now allowed in the United States, especially at the government level. How to do things. There is a mandatory method to do what the court has implemented since 2010. 57:10 so we have that guide. Then, we will review the ADA information mentioned earlier and return to our understanding of creating a comprehensive website. Considering that one fifth of the websites are visited, we have done our best to let them access our information. If not, do you have a way to communicate with us that our website has an accessibility statement? Do they have accessibility problems? You may be dealing with a third-party vendor and cannot access the product, but this is important for your current task. But you are working with them to get improved and accessible versions of their parts in the future. Unable to control now, but communicating with the supplier. Therefore, it may be important to talk about it within the accessibility statement. But it really depends on transparency. This is to allow people to communicate with you with such kind efforts and accessibility problems. 58:15 yes, most of what happens is that someone can’t do anything on the website. Or maybe just show it. I can’t use part of your website. And if you had received that feedback and done something about it, you might have been better than you are now. Oh, because no one is listening, so this problem must be reported. 58:37 this is usually the same as our quarrel. And why? If they want to fix something, try to fix it. But as Kevin said, it’s about transparency. Questions. I think. Maybe how do you know it’s necessary to explain it? 58:56 OK, which field do I belong to? 59:00, depending on Title III, depending on the public facilities and whether they belong to the courts. Because there is actually no suit. 59:11 the following is agreed. There is still uncertainty about whether someone will say. Because there are all the alternatives, it is enough. Or is there no normal website? You are reading this online. All of this is actually web-based. And I want to say that this idea is gradually weakening. Well, even if we see our state recently, everyone is far away, so there are other options. 59:36, so seriously, oh, it shouldn’t be explained that visits to my website are not always decent. Because in fact, this may be the only option that users can find
